Personalised Learning

The goal of the Personalised Learning Centre (PLC) is to cater for the needs of diverse learners at St Cuthbert’s College. Diversity encompasses many characteristics including giftedness (learning enrichment), learning differences (specialised learning intervention) and ELL (English Language Learners). The Centre will provide structure to the process of identification and provision for these students with smooth transition between the Junior and Senior Schools.

Personalising Learning

Personalising learning involves thinking about the acquisition of knowledge and understanding as an active process. It is underpinned by a belief that students should have access to learning opportunities at the level best suited to them. Every student should be given the opportunity to develop their understanding of themselves as a learner and how they can improve.
St Cuthbert’s recognises the fact the some students will require remediation and/or enrichment opportunities to cater for specific needs. Students will be considered on a case-by-case basis with pesonalised learning plans developed for those who require significant intervention to improve academic or social/emotional development.
St Cuthbert’s recognises that students spend the bulk of their time within mainstream classes. Every teacher is a teacher of diverse learners, hence a focus of the PLC is to provide professional development, in class support and mentoring of classroom teachers.

GATE (Gifted and Talented)

St Cuthbert’s defines a gifted child as one who performs or who has the ability to perform at a level significantly beyond her chronologically aged peers. Giftedness can apply to either one or a variety of learning areas and across the multiple intelligences. Giftedness is found across all cultures and groups.
At St Cuthbert’s College, gifted and talented students are entitled to an appropriately challenging and stimulating curriculum. Ongoing provision for exceptionally able children is a matter of equity and will help them to reach their optimum development and achieve emotional, physical and intellectual wellbeing.
Provision for gifted students is dependent on individual need with a combination of enrichment and acceleration opportunities available across both campuses.

Years 1 - 6: Enrich

Selected students are exposed to enrichment opportunities in some learning areas. Personalised learning plans will be developed for those students who require significant intervention.

Years 7 - 10: Quest

The middle school years offer opportunities for a combination of enrichment and/or accelerated learning pathways. This is dependent upon timetable constraints as well as staff availability. Robotics, Future Problem Solving, writing workshops, philosophy, mathematical problem solving and in-depth research are programmes/opportunities that are available for students. Personalised learning plans will be developed for those students who require significant intervention. The aim is to provide intellectually challenging activities across a range of learning areas.

Years 11 - 13: Fast Forward

Students will have the opportunity to be accelerated in certain subjects within the Senior School. The dual pathways of NCEA and IB provide choices and challenge for students with exceptional ability. This is dependent on timetable constraints.
