• Budgeting (financial literacy)
Outline
The budgeting course at Kahunui is compulsory and will introduce all Year 10 students to the basics of managing, conserving, re-cycling and sustaining scarce economic resources. This will involve on-going planning and modifying of a real budget for their house for this four week residence experience at Kahunui. This will involve making decisions to maximise their material wellbeing at Kahunui. Students will need to use and develop spreadsheet skills to produce their budget. Assessment will focus on making real life decisions, on purchasing, paying utility charges and maintaining a functional house hold.

• Social Ed (Health)
Outline
A programme that provides opportunity for students to connect with themselves and others by working in a variety of teams. Activities are designed to challenge and empower students to respond positively to change and the unknown. Experiences are provided that develop independence and resilience. Students learn to make decisions with real consequences in an environment of inclusion and equity.

• Footprint Project
Students are challenged within a sustainability framework with the question “How can you make Kahunui as good or a better place for your daughter when she comes here in 24 years time?” This question attempts to encourage students to think about place, their soft footprint, their place in guardianship, in kaitiakitanga, and to take the long view on their role in environmental, cultural and social sustainability.

Students work within a real life model, working on issues and problems they identify at Kahunui. They are encouraged to ask real questions, find real answers, have real opinions and make real decisions. The process involves either a research or action dominant project although both elements must be present. Students become experts in their chosen area and share their knowledge with their class.
