Course Outline 
Students should be able to engage with and enjoy language in all its varieties; understand, respond to and use oral, written and visual language in a range of contexts. 

Students will:
- read a variety of written texts: novels, short stories, poetry, drama and non-fiction. Close reading will help them to think critically and explore language. They will learn how to use the library more effectively.
- practise both formal and creative writing and work towards developing clear communication skills. Grammar, spelling, punctuation and sentence construction are important and will be studied.
- contribute to discussion, take part in speech and drama, learn to listen more effectively
- study aspects of the media such as film, television and magazines, and explore how visual features are used to create meaning in static images such as advertisements and posters. They will also make a short film.
- engage in a Rich Task study.

Assessment 
Internal assessment: 
• creative writing 
• produce a media presentation 
• deliver a speech in a formal situation 
• formal writing. 

Two Written Examinations: 
• read, study and show understanding of unfamiliar texts 
• read, study and show understanding of extended written texts, short texts and film 
• grammar and parts of speech.

This course is open to all students
