Student Notebooks for 2012
St Cuthbert’s College is a dual platform College.
Students use Apple notebooks for Y5-10 and have a choice of a Windows or Apple notebook for Y11-Y13.
The Apple notebook supplied for 2012 is a 13" MacBook Pro, (MD313LL/A). The College has arranged for Cyclone Computers to supply this model to the College community at a cost which is lower than that available through regular retail channels.
Parents of new students in Years 11-13 should contact the College by email to notebook@stcuthberts.school.nz to discuss the options at these levels for using a Windows notebook, and to receive details of the Windows model available through the College's preferred supplier.

FAQs regarding the Notebook Programme for purchased machines
Do I need to buy any additional software?
No, the College will install all software needed to the notebooks before they are delivered. The cost of software (approximately $80) to cover software licenses for Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite and Symantec Anti-virus is part of the annual stationery requirements list.
Can I install any additional software to the notebook?
Yes, the notebook is your daughter's possession, and can have additional software installed and customized. The only software we request that is not installed is Peer-2-Peer file sharing software.
Will I be able to connect the notebook to my wireless network at home?
Yes. When your daughter receives her notebook the account she uses to log in to the notebook will give you access to all of the computer's functions, so that you can connect to wireless networks, install printer software and other typical peripherals you would use with a computer.
If I buy my daughter's notebook through a different source, are there costs I should be aware of?
Yes, there will be costs for configuration of the notebook and for any loan notebooks that your daughter might need if there are any repairs needed to her notebook, Please contact the College via email to
notebook@stcuthberts.school.nz for more information on this.
If I don't buy my daughter's notebook through the College programme, can she get a loan notebook if hers needs repair?
Yes, but there will be a charge. This reflects the length of time that machines not purchased through the College programme typically take to be repaired. Machines purchased through the College programme have an average repair time of 3 working days. For machines purchased outside the programme we have seen repair times of up to 4 weeks.
How long can my daughter use this notebook at the College for?
The recommended life-cycle of a notebook is 3 years. However, we recognize that for some parents a longer life-cycle is desirable. A warranty and insurance option is available to cover the 4th year of usage which must be purchased with the notebook. After the 4th year your daughter is able to keep using the notebook at the College, but it is possible that there will be some applications which do not function on her notebook. If you wish to use a notebook which is older than 3 years, please contact the College by email,
notebook@stcuthberts.school.nz to confirm the suitability of the equipment.
I will have more than one daughter at the College. Can I swap notebooks between my daughters?
Yes, but it will be your daughters' responsibility to move any data and files between the notebooks and to install any additional applications.
What happens if the notebook is damaged?
The College has a fleet of loan notebooks which are provided to students if their notebook is damaged. These notebooks are available at no cost where the student’s own notebook was purchased through the College’s recommended supplier. The repair of the notebook is handled by the notebook clinic who handle the repair in conjunction with the manufacturer's authorised repair centres.
Does the College recommend a particular model case for the notebook?
The College's supplier has a range of cases available. The College does not mandate the use of a particular case as we recognise the individual needs of students with regards to how they travel to and from school, and other equipment which may be brought to school each day.
At a minimum we expect that notebooks are stored in a slipskin case inside a College backpack.
Important Points Regarding Notebooks leased from the College
College insurance does not cover privately leased notebooks, therefore we recommend you ensure that the equipment is covered by your household contents insurance.
Please ensure that leased machines are treated with respect. Machines should not be defaced in any way. A computer bag must be used to protect machines while in transit and at College.
