Dragonboating

With Dragon boating every girl on the boat has to do her personal best to take the team to a win. Teams are randomly selected and there are always more girls wanting to participate than there is room in the boats.
Three St Cuthbert’s teams were entered in the Auckland schools’ competition this year.
The Y13 Batmobile crew achieved second place in the Bowl Final and Y12 Mermaids team came third overall in the Bowl Final. The Puff team came fifth in the Plate Final.
Fantastic results!
It takes a huge effort to make the boats, provided by the New Zealand Dragon Boating Association, go in a straight line over 500m. The boats are heavy and there is no room for error. A sweep controls the steering. Most girls’ teams have a male sweep but not at St Cuthbert’s where the girls do it themselves. A caller ensures everyone works together in unison.
