Lucy Diver Awarded Writing Mentorship
Lucy Diver’s passion for writing is paying off. Sixteen-year-old Lucy, who lives in Epsom, is one of the first students in the country to be awarded a writing mentorship under the just-launched New Zealand Society of Authors (NZSA) Youth Mentor Programme.
The Year 12 St Cuthbert’s College student was nominated by her English teacher, Mrs Ros Ali, because she has shown outstanding commitment to writing in the past few years. “Lucy gives things a go and is intent on crafting and honing her writing to take it as far as she can.”
This comes hot on the heels of her success last year in the prestigious Sunday Star Times short story competition, when her story Forbidden Fruit won second place.
Sponsored by Creative New Zealand (the Arts Council), the NZSA youth programme is open to nominated Year 12 and Year 13 students nationwide. Applications are assessed by a panel of three experienced writers. Only three mentorships are awarded.
The successful students are being matched with published authors of young adult fiction and mentoring can take place face-to-face, by phone, fax, email, Skype or a combination of these, during Terms 2 and 3.
“The selection panel was very impressed with Lucy’s project and level of commitment to writing,” said NZSA Programme Manager Tina Shaw.
Her project involves a collection of short stories with interlinked themes and characters. Lucy generally writes something every day and is keen to write in different genres.
