Teaching Year 13 Physics

Facilitated by Francis Bryden, HOD Physics
Date: Monday 30 May 2011

We will look at:
  • Key ideas and how to get them across.
  • The concepts students struggle with and how to clarify them.
  • Demonstrations to liven up your classes.
  • Using a datalogger for teaching and learning.
  • Experiments. Tips and tricks.
  • Using powerpoints and free computer simulations.
This course is designed for teachers of level 3 NCEA physics who are either not specialist physics teachers or who have been teaching for a short time and would like some new ideas and support.
The course is very practical and the emphasis is on teaching and learning. Even experienced teachers of physics often find it difficult to identify the ideas that students don’t understand.
We will look at the key concepts in each topic and then consider the concepts that students usually struggle with. We will then discuss strategies to overcome these difficulties.
The strategies will include: different ways of explaining concepts, using simple demonstrations and experiments using computer animations and powerpoints using computer based dataloggers

A comprehensive set of notes, powerpoints and other resources will be provided on a CD

This workshop is limited to 24 places.
