St Cuthbert’s teams have achieved excellent results in the recent Mathex competitions, winning first place in the Year 5, Year 6 and Year 7 divisions. Mathex is a challenging and fast-paced mathematics contest where teams compete against each other to answer questions as quickly as possible. Each competition has 20 questions worth 5 points each. The winner is the first team to reach 100 points, or the team with the highest score at the end of twenty minutes.
The Year 7 and 8 competition was held on Thursday 25 August at the ASB Stadium. There were over 60 teams competing in both year levels. The St Cuthbert’s Year 7 A team won the competition, reaching a perfect score of 100 more than six minutes before the end of the competition. When the clock stopped, they were still the only team with 100 on the scorecard. The Year 7 B team finished with an impressive 80 points on the board. The two Year 8 teams also achieved commendable results, with a score of 65 for the A team and 70 for the B team. No schools scored the perfect 100 in this division.
The Year 5 and 6 competition was held the following week on Thursday 8 September. There were 26 teams in both divisions. The Year 5 A team came in first place, reaching 100 points with 8 minutes to go. The next team to reach 100 took 19 minutes. Another victory was achieved by the Year 6 A team, who won their division by reaching 100 points with five and a half minutes to go. No other team scored 100 points. All of the B teams also finished high up the order, with the Year 6 team coming in joint third.
Congratulations girls on these outstanding achievements.
