Our Year 5 students engaged in a Science Day recently. They got to further develop their scientific skills and ideas working with the Year 5 teachers and the College Science specialist teachers. They worked in the Science labs engaging in hands on Science activities. Cather Simpson from University of Auckland was our keynote speaker. She also worked with the girls on glow in the dark polymers. It is great to see our girls’ love of Science blossom in the Junior School.
Our Year 6 girls had their Moving On Up assembly today. It was organised by the girls with support from Mrs Clarkson. This special assembly reflected the girls’ time in the Junior School prior to them being welcomed into the Middle School by Ms Talbot. Our girls did a fantastic job. I wish them well as they head into Year 7 in 2017.
Our community was able to share in two gorgeous events as we lead into the Advent season. Thank you to Sue Porter and Andrew Stewart for their work with our girls for the Nativity. The evening service was wonderful with our girls sharing the Christmas story through song and play with great joy. Thanks to all of the Junior School staff for your support. Our annual Year 5-8 Carol Service provided us with a wonderful evening of Christmas carols and music. My thanks to Reverend Roxy Gahegan for leading this beautiful and thought-provoking service. The combined choirs were in fine voice with such joy. My thanks to our Music staff for their support of our choral and instrumental groups for this service.
Sincere thanks to the P&F on behalf of the Junior School team for their continued support of us in building community. These events give us time to catch up together and build positive relationships. We have so many wonderful volunteers on the P&F making this happen with great heart.
We farewell Mrs Rosemary Mowbray who has been a teacher in Year 1 while Mrs Katie Gemmell has been on parental leave. Rosemary has been a wonderful teacher and staff member in our Junior School. She has ensured that our Year 1 girls have had a consistent, fun and creative environment in which to thrive and learn. Ms Judi Paape has worked in Yera 3 this term while Mrs Mandy Simon has been on parental leave. Judi has enabled the girls in 3SON to end the year buoyantly in all areas of learning. We wish Rosemary and Judi all the very best for the future. Our girls have benefited greatly from their skill and experience.
We welcome back Miss Brooke Bowden to the Junior School in 2017. Brooke will join the Year 1 team in 2017. We are thrilled to have Brooke back with us. A few teachers will change year groups next year: Mrs Lis Lewis Year 4 – 6 Dean will teach in Year 5, Mrs Cyndy Thomas will teach in Year 6 and Mrs Victoria Maeataanoa will teach in Year 3. All other teachers remain in the current year groups.
In the new year I will be sending out our wonderful Junior School teacher bios with their photos so you can begin the year knowing a little bit about your daughter’s new teacher for 2017. A reminder that our Meet the Teacher is Thursday 2 February at 6:30pm, beginning in Clouston Hall followed by P&F refreshments in the Junior School playground.
Our recent Deans’ assemblies and the Final Assembly yesterday provided opportunities to celebrate progress and achievement in a range of areas. Congratulations to all girls who received an award. I look forward to our Prize Giving service next Tuesday where we acknowledge our students receiving excellence awards in a range of learning areas. In much anticipation we will also announce the winning House!
End of year reports will be emailed home on Tuesday 6 December. Your daughter’s report will include her 2017 class placement. Class teachers, specialist staff and Deans have been working closely with me to ensure that class placements reflect each student’s social, relational and academic needs. Careful decision making for each girl is based on these criteria.
Congratulations to all girls in finishing the year strongly and with such heart. As this is our final College Connection for 2016 I wish you all a happy Christmas and a safe term break.
Ms Julie Gifkins
