Middle School Values has been incredibly busy this year with our girls contributing to a range of organised activities and projects, bringing along new and used goods and giving their time generously.
The highlight of Term 2 was definitely seeing the Service Team in action sorting and counting the huge bundles of new and nearly new pyjamas that the Middle School girls had donated for Kidz First and to Presbyterian Support Northern.
Social Action is an important part of our Middle School Social Studies Inquiry and this collection provided a timely response for the Year 8 girls, who had been studying New Beginnings (an inquiry that investigated, among other things, the financial challenges faced by families living in Auckland).
Hayley Minturn has also been successful with her initiative BOB – Blankets on Beds. Hayley introduced the idea of collecting blankets for those in need last year, and a carload was collected again this year. This year the blankets were gratefully received by De Paul House. This collection is ongoing and all donations can be dropped at reception or left in the Sharing Shed.
The Sharing Shed continues to be emptied regularly by the Service and Values Team. Donations of essential items for emergency housing are eagerly received and distributed by Presbyterian Support Northern.
It is wonderful to see Year 7 girls demonstrating our By Love Serve Motto so keenly. Lucia Lundon, Bella Sandler-Wright and Sophia Owen recently organised a sale of gingerbread horses for Riding for the Disabled and Tyeece Malyon, Isabel Chaplin and Sophia Hall held a raffle in support of the SPCA.
Our Year 8 girls are currently making teddy bears in support of Women’s Refuge and refugee support groups. It is wonderful to see them being so creative. Later in Term 3 will see our final donation of sweet treats for Aranui, a Christchurch school that we have supported since the earthquakes in 2010.
Term 4 will see us focus on two further initiatives: the Year 7s display their culinary skills as they bake their favourite slice, cookies or cakes (and gateaux) which will be sold to the school community. Money raised from this will be given to their Values project Make a Wish. Then later in November our Christmas Giving, a long standing tradition in the College, when our girls bring in a Christmas gift and place it under the Christmas tree in the foyer of Clouston Hall. These gifts are distributed to children who would otherwise not receive a gift at Christmas.
The Middle School Values Team thank you all for your generous support of all our initiatives this year.
