Seven teams of four girls per team from both the Junior and Middle Schools participated in the Junior Schools Sustainability Challenge at Arataki Visitors Centre. The two hour adventure race also featured 10 sustainability-themed activities including using a pit saw, naming parts of a bike to be a sustainable citizen, counting bees, improvising first aid slings and identifying food sources for native birds.
Comments from each year level about their day are:
Year 7: “It was challenging and fun at the same time.” – Sophia Reade 7BAI
Year 8: “The pit saw activity taught us how they used to get wood. Pull, pull, pull.” – Isla Slade 8STN
As well as successfully completing these activities, teams ran to a possible 20 different sites, to earn points. Our St Cuthbert’s teams enjoyed success placing 1st=, 3rd, 4th and 5th. Prizes reflected the sustainability theme with the two best placed teams bringing home a kowhai and kahikatea tree each. Congratulations girls.
