“Year 7 25m freestyle!” called the umpire, ushering us to our places.
My heart pounded against my chest as I stepped onto the diving block. My hands trembled, and thoughts raced through my head – will the water be freezing? What if I don’t come first? But all of these thoughts didn’t matter, because the buzzer sounded. As the beep echoed around my head, I managed to jump in.
I was totally oblivious to the chants and cheers as I entered the cold water with a splash, submerging myself into the blue world of silence. As I came up to breathe, the cheers and chants resumed. The water slid across my skin, and I could feel my brain urging my body to swim faster, and faster. My arms thrashed furiously, and my legs kicked faster than ever, as a sudden pulse of energy rushed through my body.
My arm strained to reach the wall, barely touching it. I tried again, and this time, I managed to grasp the edge. Looking up, I saw that I came second, well before the others. While I retained my breath, I glanced around; and saw the umpires chatting, not even bothering to look our way. I sighed and climbed up.
Lean to the Left, Lean to the right,
Stand up, Sit down,
Fight white, fight!
I smiled – our House chant! I ran quickly to the bleachers, and chanted with my fellow mates in unison.
We’ve got spirit, yes we do! We’ve got spirit, how ‘bout you?
