On behalf of the St Cuthbert’s College Trust Board, I am delighted to announce the appointment of Ms Roz Mexted as our next Principal. Roz will join St Cuthbert’s from 1 November 2016. She will use the remainder of this year to meet with staff and the wider school community, gather information and create a solid foundation for assuming full Principal duties from Term 1 next year.
Roz joins us from Westlake Girls High School (one of the largest schools in New Zealand with 2150 students and approximately 200 staff) where she has been Principal since 2011.
Roz is widely respected for her leadership skills and her inclusive and open approach to staff, students and parents. She impressed the Board with her considerable experience and results achieved in leadership roles at other schools, as well as her passion for girls’ education, ability to think strategically and creatively about the future of St Cuthbert’s, appreciation of ‘By Love Serve’, and her innovative approach to education while still being respectful of the College’s traditions.
Before her role at Westlake Girls High School, Roz was Principal of Nga Tawa Diocesan School in Marton for 10 years. She has also been Deputy Principal of Woodford House, Head of Department and Year 9 Dean at Napier Boys High School, and held teaching positions at Colenso High School, Queen Margaret College and Upper Hutt College.
She has a sound knowledge of financial and organisational management, gained from both her school leadership roles as well as her early career when she spent six years in the corporate sector and managing her own business.
Roz has a Master of Education Administration (Hons) from Massey University, a Bachelor of Arts from Victoria University, and a Diploma of Secondary Teaching from the Christchurch College of Education. She was elected to the Executive of the Alliance of Girls’ Schools Australasia in 2008 and was Vice President in 2013 and 2014. She is Vice President of the Auckland Secondary Principals Association and a mentor to other school principals.
The Board received a very large number of applications for the St Cuthbert’s College Principal role, and was delighted with the exceptional calibre of applicants. The Board worked closely with specialist search and leadership assessment firm Korn Ferry to assess and determine the shortlist, conduct interviews and make the key appointment to the Principal role.
We are delighted Roz will join us as the new Principal of St Cuthbert’s and look forward to welcoming her, partner Gavin, and 26 year-old daughter Sophie to the St Cuthbert’s family.
We will arrange opportunities for Roz to meet staff, students, parents and the wider College community – and we will be back in touch about this as soon as plans are finalised.
As I mentioned in my last note to you, Associate Principal and Head of the Senior School Ms Helen Robertson will be Acting Principal in Term 4 this year. Helen has, over many years and on numerous occasions before, capably stepped in as Acting Principal when required.
Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to once again acknowledge Mrs Lynda Reid for her outstanding 20 years of leadership at St Cuthbert’s and the extraordinary legacy she leaves for the College. Farewell events are being planned for September and the dates and details for these will be communicated to you soon.
Wishing you all an enjoyable and safe holiday break.
Mr Simon Allen
Chair, St Cuthbert’s College Trust Board
