Throughout Term 3, Year 11 PE students took part in a Kiwisport module, which involved coaching miniball to Year 4 students. We were split into groups of 3-4 and were in charge 9-10 girls. Most of the term was spent planning, coaching and reflecting on sessions in preparation for a tournament involving all Year 4 students.
It gave us the ability to take charge of our own learning and have an insight into applying effective interpersonal skills. Particular benefits were managing conflict within a group and applying strategies to support and encourage individual students.
We had a lot of fun during this part of the Year 11 PE program, especially being able to have our own teams that we could work with. We were able to get to know our group of Year 4 girls and create a relationship with them.
After nearly 8 weeks of preparation it was finally tournament day. We had a motivational talk with our team and told them the most important rule of the day was to have fun and try their best. Each team played five games to ensure everyone got a chance to play. Not only was the atmosphere enjoyable, it was also fun being able to organise and take part in the running of the tournament itself including refereeing and scoring with our peers. The girls were able to get active with their friends and let their competitive side out. The afternoon turned out very successful with a lot of smiles throughout.
