Brain Bee at De Paul House
De Paul House in Northcote provides housing and family support services to families who need help. Their service aims to keep families united in a safe and dignified environment, and help them address the issues that have led to them being homeless.
The Brain Bee girls, Kassandra Wang, Rosanna Wu, Celine Goh, Naushiha Aravinthan, Annie Sun, Georgia Odlin, Cindy Lin and Luka Maamaloa, made a visit to De Paul House to deliver the 55 inch Sony TV, which was the prize from the Brain Bee competition. They were shown around the complex and given an insight into the 12 weeks families spend there while being assisted into new safe homes. In the past St Cuthbert’s has also donated blankets, sheets, towels and new pyjamas. Thanks to Roberta Batistich and Lisa Brown who mentor the Brain Bee students.
Eat My Lunch
This term YKSAX wanted to be able to give back to the community in some way. Students were shocked to learn that according to statistics published by Child Poverty Monitor, over a quarter of children in NZ live in poverty. Girls decided to support Eat My Lunch, co-founded by Old Girl Lisa King, which donates a lunch to a student in a low decile school for every lunch bought. The girls banded together with another tutor class – YKFOO – and over 20 students participated for a fantastically friendly lunch hour, made even better by the knowledge that 20 lunches were received by hungry kids!
