Throughout Term 1, Year 13 NCEA Physical Education students have been researching Issues in Safety Management involved in White Water Rafting contexts. By looking at potential issues and influences from a socio-ecological perspective, students were able to think critically and question the status quo.
Theory was put into practice on 10th March when we visited Vector Wero Whitewater Park. The girls were able to work with Vector Wero Operations Manager & Whitewater Rafting Instructor to gain an insight and question safety procedures that have been put in place. After an intense theory session, the girls hit the water (literally). We experienced whitewater rafting on a grade 3/4 river complete with a 4.5m drop and then we floated down the same grade river without any flotation device.
A truly epic and memorable experience was had by all. Being able to see first hand, how safety procedures are planned and dealt with in a reasonably high-risk activity was one of the most valuable lessons learnt.
