The Premier Water Polo team played in the North Island Secondary School Championships held in Auckland from the 29th March – 2nd April. The team went from strength to strength overcoming some tough pool games to top their pool and then move into the quarterfinals where they beat Carmel College 10-3. They then moved on to the semi-finals were they beat a strong Westlake side 9-4. The stage was set to play Diocesan in the final, in what turned out to be a thrilling final with the girls trailing 2-1 with less than 2 minutes to play, Caitlin Mary Parker Allen levelled the scores at 2-2 before Tai Nimo scored the game winner with less than 30 seconds left on the clock. This was a historic win for the girls as it is the first time St Cuthbert’s has won back to back North Island Championships. Caitlin Mary Parker Allen and Tai Nimo were selected in the tournament team and Bernadette Doyle was named Most Valuable player of the tournament.
The Premier team continued their winning ways by beating familiar foe Diocesan in the Auckland League finals. After a close first half, the girls pulled away with a strong 6-3 victory, led by two goals by Sophie Dixon. The girls retained the Auckland League trophy and made more history by being the first St Cuthbert’s water polo team to win consecutive Auckland League titles. The girls have one final tournament the National Secondary Schools Championships from 18-21st April in Wellington. We wish them all the best.
