Hockey Coaching

St Cuthbert’s College Hockey has a not so secret weapon helping our teams stay at the top of their game.
Mr Simon Norton has represented New Zealand and coached at national level and we’re lucky enough to have him as part of our staff.Director of Hockey at the College, Mr Norton, represented New Zealand with the Black Sticks men’s team from 1984 to 1987 and in 1995 was asked to coach the St Cuthbert’s College 1st XI.Mr Norton not only coaches but promotes the game within College and the community. “My job is to develop hockey and the players in the College and market our teams and wonderful facilities to the rest of New Zealand,” he says.
As part of promotion the College hosts the ANZAC Tournament, which is an invitational festival competition of teams from through out New Zealand.
The College also hosts representative team trials and some National Hockey League trainings.
“There are currently 28 hockey teams in the College and it’s growing every year. I would hope in time that we would have a team in the club competition and have an old girls side as well,” says Mr Norton. Our 1st XI team is one of only five schools which have been in the Federation Cup since 1996.
