Juliet Greer with Mrs Lynda Reid at the Government House Ceremony

St Cuthbert’s student awarded top scholarship

St Cuthbert’s College Old Girl, Juliet Greer, was officially honoured for her first placing in Scholarship Visual Arts last year (2007), at a Top Scholar Awards Ceremony at Government House in Wellington.
Miss Greer, a Y13 student in 2007, first discovered she had won outstanding scholarships for design and accounting back in February.
Thinking she couldn’t do much better than that, when she saw that the marking schedule for her design portfolio, she thought the 24/24 mark was a template that hadn’t been filled out properly.
It wasn’t until she received NZQA forms which said Top Scholar on them, that she realised she was the NZQA Top Scholar for Visual Arts.
Visual Arts includes painting, printmaking, photography, design and sculpture.
“I was extremely shocked but very pleased and relieved to see that all the long hours in the art department had finally paid off.”
Miss Greer’s eight page portfolio was an in-depth exploration of her Year 13 design boards.
On her boards she had looked at the branding of a theoretical Auckland tour company, “Cones of Auckland”, which provides tours to seven of Auckland’s main volcanoes.
The portfolio featured an old volcanology book reconstructed with updated information and a modern look.

Top Scholars are granted $2,000 a year, for three years, provided they maintain a ‘B’ grade average in their tertiary studies.
For now, Miss Greer studies commerce and property at the University of Auckland
“I'm not to sure what I will do when I finish my conjoint degree but I hope to include business and design in what ever I end up doing.”

St Cuthbert’s College gained 106 scholarships in 2007, including 20 at outstanding level, two national outstanding scholars’ awards, nine national scholars’ awards and Miss Greer’s Top Scholar award.
