Junior School House Captains

House Captains for Y8 hold busy and responsible positions. The girls appointed are in charge of getting their houses organised for the swimming and the sports days, running a house sport such as soccer or tennis in Term 3 or 4, and putting on a shared fast-food lunch once a term. They also have daily duties that include ensuring the playground is kept tidy.

What’s interesting is the process by which the House Captains and other leaders are appointed. Prospective House Captains are nominated by their peers. They deliver a speech and a vote determines the best girls to go on a shortlist. The top few girls are interviewed by Y8 teacher Melinda Crookenden. The other leaders are appointed by a process of preparing a CV at the end of Y7 and writing a letter of application. These processes give the applicants a taste of what job-seeking will be like in their adult lives.
