Kylene Jones
Kylene Jones has become New Zealand’s top Technology student with the 2009 Top Subject Scholarship in Technology. As a Year 13 student, she broke new ground by being the first technology student to specialise in ICT.
“My friend emailed me because I was in Singapore when the results came out,” says Kylene. “I was shocked and didn’t believe it at first. Then I thought of the amount of time and work I put in and the support I got from Miss Donald, the director of ICT. I was really stoked overall!”
Kylene used her background as a scholarship history student to create a website (www.hitstate.net/waikatowars) for her history teacher that has become a trusted learning resource for other students. The site’s focus is the Waikato wars.
She interviewed Lynda Reid on the place of e-learning in the college, then produced a 5,000-word report that was the basis of her work for the scholarship. It received full marks.
Kylene is now studying for a Bachelor of Information Management degree at Auckland University.
As the recipient of three Scholarships (two at Scholarship level for History and Accounting and one at Outstanding level for Technology) and a Top Subject Scholarship Award, she will receive $2,500 for three years while studying.
