International Experiences
The Language department’s exchanges with Parisian schools École Alsacienne and Lycée Louis le Grand encourage connections between students and their peers on the other side of the world.
École Alsacienne students Elvire François, Judith Martin and Donatienne Ferré, have been at the College for the last two months, during their end of school-year holidays. They found it interesting wearing a uniform and having no boys at the school, were fascinated with the spaces for sport and were impressed with the equipment in the art department, particularly the “professional darkroom”.
Six students from Lycée Louis le Grand also arrived at the College at the end of June. Timing for these exchanges meant that unlike last year the students could attend the College ball - an experience not common in French schools.
French Exchange Opportunities
St Cuthberts and Lycée Louis le Grand Year 12
We were very excited about the inaugural student exchange between St Cuthbert’s College and the Lycée Louis le Grand in Paris.
Five French students arrived on 13 June 2008 to spend six weeks with their host families. Their host students then spent six weeks in Paris in December-January. This exchange programme is a wonderful enrichment opportunity for our Year 12 students who have been identified as having advanced skills in French and is part of the college GATE programme for French.
Named after Louis XIV, and one of the most prestigious French high schools, situated in the centre of Paris, the Latin Quarter, the lycée maintains a very high academic standard.
This school is consistently one of the top two schools in France on league tables. It is a co-educational school of 1700 students in total. It plays a leading role in the education of the French elite and is renowned for its high success rates of entry into the top French universities.
Famous ex-pupils include the philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre, politicians such as Georges Pompidou and Jacques Chirac, and many writers including Voltaire and Victor Hugo.
